Microsoft Purview part 1: This is part 1 of several parts dealing with Microsoft Purview and related tools
Sensitivity labels in Microsoft 365
Sensitivity labels in Microsoft Purview give you the ability to classify and protect your organization's data. The labels help you tell users how sensitive the information is, and they give you tools to ensure that the data is handled in accordance with your organization's policies. Microsoft 365 comes with a set of sensitivity labels out of the box, you can choose to use these further or create your own labels with associated settings
The labels publish with a label policy, here you can customize which users and apps you want to hit with the labels.
In the label policy, you choose whether to set requirements for labels, data and fabric/PowerBI content etc. You can also send users to a help page where you can describe what these labels mean. Furthermore, you choose whether you want to set standard labels on content or whether the user must choose which label is relevant.
Benefits of using sensitivity labels: Classification and protection: Sensitivity labels allow you to label documents and emails with different levels of sensitivity, such as “Personal”, “Public”, “Confidential” and “Highly Confidential”. This helps you ensure that the right protection is applied to the right content.
Custom protection settings: For each label, you can configure protection settings such as watermarks, encryption and access control. For example, you can use a “Confidential” label to add a watermark and encrypt the content. Cross-app and cross-platform support: Sensitivity labels work in Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. You can also use them in third-party apps using Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps.
Easy administration: The labels can be managed centrally, and you can assign them to users and groups using label policies.
Products that support sensitivity labels:
Microsoft Teams: Protect content in Teams channels.
Microsoft 365 Groups: Use labels to ensure collaboration in groups.
SharePoint: Configure default sharing link type for sites and documents.
Outlook: Label email messages with the correct label.
